A Change in Plans

Rain Dancer has a new sire!

I agonized over this choice. I really did. I hate making a change in plans after I've been so set on something. However, change is good, especially when the change is for the better.

So why the change?

Well, two reasons. One, well, McLovin's owner...I haven't been able to get a hold of her. I've emailed her several times about Sophie's cycles and haven't heard from her. I know she's around as I've seen her horse ads go up online and seen some be marked sold.

I also got some bad vibes from her the last time I was around her. I sold a horse for her, and another friend had brought a horse over that I sold as well. I let both of them handle the details--I had just let the buyer know about both horses. Normally she would invite me in for water or something like that. All I got was a handshake and a curt goodbye. I ignored it and didn't worry much about it, but now that I've thought more about it and combined it with the lack of emails....
I considered McLovin's owner a friend and I thought we had a good relationship. I don't know what I could have done to change that. If I have done something, I wish I knew so I could make it up.

The second reason is that I haven't spent much time with McLovin, and now I realize why is because didn't feel welcome to due to the situation. McLovin was sweet, but not nearly as sweet and curious as Merlin. I am more excited about this match because of Merlin's temperament. McLovin has better confirmation, but I'd rather pick the good mind over the better confirmation. Merlin is well built for his breed and is a horse that I believe is more along the lines of what I want.

Honestly, I believe in customer service. The fact that Merlin was being showcased and his owner allowed me to be around him at the Festival so much, that to me means a lot about what his owner's goals are. It also tells me that she trusts her stallion enough to be a exceptional example of his breed. If someone wants to get the breedings, they need to be willing to work with a potential customer. I don't understand where I went wrong, but perhaps I didn't. Perhaps the change in manners is due to some decision I have no control over.

I thought about calling her and seeing what's going on. But honestly, I don't want to mess with it. A friend of mine said that she wouldn't breed a horse if she wasn't sure about the owner. She said that it's obvious to her that she doesn't care if I breed Sophie to McLovin. Another friend said we can't know what's going on in someone's mind if they won't communicate to you. I thought both pieces of advice were very good points. Both friends also said if she happens to call in the spring, I can tell her I found a stallion I like better and leave it at that.

While I hope I haven't done anything wrong, again, I can't know if I have if she is just going to act as she has. So we'll see what unfolds.

For now, Merlin captured my heart in a way McLovin didn't, so I believe this is the right choice.

Now I think Rain Dancer might need a new name....
